ALEC: Day 5 Training
So, I missed yesterday's training. After having felt like I had a good run on Saturday and that my legs felt like they were getting stronger and better, I woke up yesterday morning with a major pain in my right foot. I could tell that it was coming from my thighs and calves and kept stretching and rubbing my foot all day. I decided I better hold off on training until it felt better. Last night my left foot and legs started hurting. So, I did what any athlete would do...I ran for the Ben Gay...LOL. Luckily, I think it did the trick, as my feet and legs feel better today. So, today, I will run what I should have yesterday, which is 35 minutes. I'll be off the schedule of having two days rest (should have been today and tomorrow), but I think I'll be fine. I'm driving a friend up to Santa Rosa today to visit his mom and have decided to run at Howarth Park or Spring Lake. It's supposed to rain today (can you believe that) but the Bay Area weather is always so unpredictable that I figured I might as well train in the rain so that if for some strange, strange reason it decides to rain on September 25th, I'll know how to dress and what it feels like to run in the rain.

OMG you are so funny. you write just how you talk. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI think your body is adjusting to all this newness you are introducing. Did you like running somewhere different?
Loved running at Howarth Park. It was pretty quiet because of the rain...just me and nature (and a friendly coyote). I wore my regular running shorts, a new shirt that Angelina bought me - THANK YOU - a light weight, weaved long sleeved shirt and a wind breaker. It seemed to be the right combination. At one point I could have taken off the long sleeved shirt, but decided to just finish out the run as I started. The only thing I realized I need to think about, if I ever run in the rain again, is what to do with my iPhone. Luckily my wind breaker has a pocket in front that I put my iPhone in and zipped close with only the wire from my headset coming out, but it bounced up and down and moved around as I ran because the pocket covers the full width of the wind breaker. I think they have water proof cases, so I may look into that. The other new accessory was my new water bottle holder that fits over my hand. LOVED IT (thanks, again, LW). It fit perfectly and felt just like another part of my body.
ReplyDeleteThe run itself was good overall. This was my first training on a hilly course. Grant you, these weren't major hills (except for the one leading up to the damn) but nevertheless, it was definitely a learning experience on how to pace myself going up the hills and let myself go, going down the hills. My overall pace was slower than what I have been doing but I'm not beating myself up because I know it's all about training in different conditions. The first time I got to the hill that heads up to damn, I only made it half way running and then walked the rest. But to make up for walking half of the hill during my running intervals, I shortened my next walking interval and ran the rest of that interval, combining it with the next running interval (meaning probably ran 4.5 minutes instead of 3). As I looped back around for my second attempt at the hill leading up to the damn, I just kept going and you know what...I made it up the hill still running (even though it was slow). As Mark always said during his training, it's amazing what the body will adjust to if you just keep going. One other note, on my last running interval I decided to increase my speed just to see if I could push myself. I noticed that my body actually seemed to run easier and felt more relaxed at that increased speed instead of the pace I was trying to keep myself at. Would love to hear some feedback from other runners on whether or not I should attempt to run the faster pace if my body felt more comfortable at that pace instead of being conservative and running at a slower pace. Overall, nice, fun run.
awesome. good job on the hills. yes, if you feel comfortable running at faster pace, keep it up. maybe on your next run try to go 30 seconds to 1 minute faster per mile. i bet you can do it without much trouble.
